About Me

Alex Frediani's profile picture

I am a lecturer in Community-led Development in the Global South at the Development Planning Unit specialising in squatter settlement upgrading policies and participatory approaches to development. Areas of expertise include human development, housing, urban development, participation and Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach.

My PhD explores different strategies to squatter settlement upgrading through the evaluation of projects from Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. Recently I have finished a consultancy with the UNDP-Brazil using participatory methods for the assessment of needs in the 10 municipalities of lowest Human Development Indices in Brazil. Since 2008, I have been partnering with Leonard Cheshire Disability & Inclusive Development on an initiative exploring capabilities and disabilities in the urban context, which involves a series of workshop in India with local grass roots organizations. With Architecture Sans Frontieres – UK, I have been running workshops in Salvador da Bahia, exploring bottom-up squatter settlement upgrading strategies and housing rights.
