Learning and Professional Needs

Three main areas or topics I would like to develop in the next 6 months.

Creative Thinking Ability

Hours: 3.5
30 Nov 2012 - 31 May 2013
Develop further Creative thinking abilities which would be a necessary skill at my analyst role in Bank of America Merrill Lynch. This would be achieved by the following actions and techniques: - Brainstorm ideas on one topic onto a large piece of paper: don't edit these. Just write them down. - Allowing myself to play with an idea whilst you go for a walk. - Draw or paint a theory on paper. - Ask the same question at least twenty times and give a different answer each time. - Combine some of the features of two different objects or ideas to see if you can create several more. - Change your routine. Do things a different way. Walk a different route to college. - Be open to ideas when they are still new: look for ways of making things work and pushing the idea to its limits. - Ask questions such as 'what if….?' Or 'supposing….?'.

Presentation Skills

Hours: 1.5
30 Nov 2012 - 31 May 2013
Improve further my presentation skills as this is an essential ability for any analyst role at investment banking industry. This would be achieved by implementing the following: 1. Learn to understand my audience. 2. Preparing my content. 3. Delivering confidently. 4. Controlling the environment.
Location: London

Communication Skills

Hours: 5.5
30 Nov 2012 - 31 May 2013
Improve further my communication skills thorugh the following steps: 1. Awareness of my own interaction with other people is the first step in improving my communication skills. Learn to identify which types of situations make me uncomfortable and then modify my behavior to achieve positive results is a critical step in improving my communication skills. I can learn to become aware of behaviors in other people that prompt me to respond in negative ways and modify my own behavior to turn the situation into a positive experience. 2. I must accept responsibility for my own behavior and do not fear apologizing for errors in judgment or insensitive actions. Asking others for honest feedback about the way you interact with others can be very helpful. Accept the negative feedback along with the positive and make changes accordingly. 3. My non-verbal communication is equally as important as the things that I say. Positive body language is extremely important in my interactions with other people. If my words and my actions do not match, I will have a difficult time succeeding in social situations. 4. In order to learn how to improve my communication skills, I must become a great listener. I must fight the urge to respond immediately and really listen to what the other person is trying to communicate. Offering suggestions or criticism before I am certain of the other person's intent can only lead to frustration for both parties. 5. Improving my communication skills is a process and cannot be accomplished overnight . Trying to improve or change too many things at once will be counter-productive. 6. Maximize my positive personality traits and use them in my interactions with others. Good communication and great listening skills are the most important tools I can use in improving my communication skills. I can learn how to improve my communication skills by developing excellent listening skills, learning to resolve problems and conflicts, understanding body language, and accepting responsibility for my own negative behavior.

RBC Recruitment Team

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a third year student at UCL studying BSc in Information Management for Business. I came to respect the unique culture that characterizes RBC from previous liaisons and presentations. I have learnt that the fundamentals of its culture are teamwork, diversity, multiculturalism, learning and challenge. Having done a significant research I have leant that women make up about one third of RBC's executives and senior managers. This shows the particular focus of RBC on providing opportunities for women. I believe this would strongly assist in my career development. I was very impressed to learn that RBC outperformed its competitors by being ranked as the Best Private Banking Services in Canada and Caribbean in Euromoney’s 2012 rankings of private banking performance. What attracts me is the opportunity to network with highly talented mentors in the industry and to hone and develop new skills.

I believe that a graduate position in Wealth Management at RBC is the most exciting position a graduate can start a career with. The main reason why I have chosen to apply to the Wealth Management Graduate Programme is because I have a real passion for finance, and I am interested in exploring an area that has close relationships with clients and allows for creativity. Wealth Management attracts me in that I view it as a balance between being out in the market and in contact with clients.I am also passionate about investing, and have a strong desire to develop my marketing, product and financial analysis skills. I strongly believe that Wealth Management provides a good opportunity to combine technical knowledge and interpersonal skills. Wealth Management clients are by definition successful and interesting individuals and being exposed to intelligent people is very attractive. I thrive in situations where I am handed complex problems in a demanding environment and have to come up with tangible solutions. I am particularly keen to be in a direct client facing role and Wealth Management seems to fit both my career inspirations and my own skill set.

I developed strong client service skills by completing my summer internship at Elite Stroi where I had a summer-long project, which was examining client behaviour. I further improved my client service skills by being an assistant for a private investor as I had a chance to work closely with foreign investors. During this role I also gained knowledge of the real estate industry and investment tactics. I demonstrated analytical and creative thinking abilities by developing and analysing surveys as part of my projects during internship at Citigroup. I also developed a strong sense of discretion and confidentiality by collecting and summarising responses of the "HR Business Partner Role and Brand Awareness Survey". Through my experience as a Student Ambassador I achieved excellent social and interpersonal skills. As a Pre analyst Campus Ambassador at Deutsche Bank I learnt how to deal with people from different backgrounds easily, and I consider this to be a vital aspect in Wealth Management as it is a relationship-focused business. Finally, I gained wide knowledge of Wealth Management business by successfully completing training courses at Citigroup.

I would like to thank you for your time in considering this application and hope to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Meline Arakelyan

Employment history

June 2012 - August 2012

During my summer internship at Citigroup I was involved in various projects. First of all, I have successfully completed an individual project called "HR Business Partner Role and Brand Awareness Survey". I developed a questionnaire to capture current perception of the role of HR Business Partner within O&T and business expectations over HR partnership. I launched the survey by distributing the questionnaire to three major groups of respondents: O&T Managers, employees and HR team members. I also captured and documented information on current HRBP communication practices through individual interviews with O&T HR Team. Finally, I summarised and analysed the available feedback to identify strong and development areas. My second project was a group project for the EMEA Learning Team. The project entailed coordinating information from 55 countries by working closely with the HR and Learning teams to identify course requirements and offerings, vendors, as well as local regulations, funding, languages, etc. The end result of the project provided analysis and recommendations on a standard core curriculum to be offered across EMEA, as well as a summary by country of the local offerings, requirements and regulations beyond the core curriculum. I have further developed my project management skills as I was coordinating data gathering and analysis across region to achieve project goals. I have improved my collaboration and influencing skills through partnering with HR and Learning professionals across EMEA to encourage participation in the discovery data gathering exercise, and working with project teammates for deliverables.

September 2011 - June 2012

My main responsibilities as a Pre Analyst Campus Ambassador at Deutsche Bank included building market intelligence and producing two written reports. The reports included analysis and recommendations made for the campus recruitment process. I also helped market events and supported ongoing Deutsche Bank promotional activity at UCL. Deutsche Bank holds various events for undergraduate students. One of the examples was the Athlete Academy Event. My task as a Pre Analyst Campus Ambassador was to attract as many students as possible. First of all, I sent e-mails to each sport society at UCL. Then, individual meetings with the presidents of the societies were organised. This strategy proved to be very effective because the Athlete Academy Event attracted a large number of students. Being a Pre Analyst Campus Ambassador has helped to broaden my finance and banking knowledge.

June 2011 - August 2011

During my summer internship at London Business School I was assisting a PHD student in conducting his research project which included searching through a series of archival sources and gathering information about publications in management journals. My main task was to read various articles and summarise the findings into Microsoft Excel tables. The assignment was challenging as I had to read and analyse over 1000 articles under extreme time pressure. To make the process faster I tried to "invent" a new technique of how to skim the articles instead of reading them. It helped me to save time and complete the work of high standards. This experience has been invaluable to me. It helped to learn how to manage my work under time pressure.

Address: Regent's Park London NW1 4SA

January 2009 - June 2010

I was a Student Ambassador at Bellerbys College, which meant that I would show and promote the college to potential students and their agents and this, I think, proves that I can be trusted in maintaining a brand image.I had attended a large number of Q&A sessions, the questions were mainly about the courses and extracurricular activities that Bellerbys College offers to students. It helped to enhance my leadership, organisational and communication skills.

June 2006 - August 2006

I completed a 3 months placement assessing how to improve relationships with foreign customers in Elite Stroy, a construction company in Moscow. One of my responsibilities as a summer intern included acting as an interpreter for the clients of the company. My typical day was starting with early morning reconciliation, and dealing with e-mails. I also had a summer-long project, which was examining client behaviour. I had to be motivated and eager to learn. I also had to know how to handle numerous tasks at once, as well as being an effective communicator. To identify and analyse problems I had to gather information that reveals their causes, which calls for excellent problem-solving skills and close attention to detail. It helped to improve my presentation skills, and gave me the opportunity to put my language and business skills into practice.
