Introduction
I am a MEng Mechanical Engineering student at UCL.
My top 5 strengths are:

I completely agree with the results of the strengths finder. I have always described myself as a communicative and positive person who likes to get things done and I believe this tool will become very useful when at the time of making teamwork easier and smoother.
One unique thing of myself is that I love to meet new people and know about their culture.
I expect to get a great experience from this course that will help me improve my teamwork and individual skills and I hope it can help me understand sustainability problems around the world better.
My Country Research
The country I have been assigned is USA, more specifically the Midwest area, whose biggest city is Chicago, in the state of Illinois.
We have been given three challenges and we have been asked to choose one to develop. Following I will give a Ranking of my preferred challenges and I will show my research on the one I most want to develop.
Ranking of Challenges:
1.- Challenge 3: Design a household renewable power system that will provide a sufficient amount of electricity annually to support the typical energy usage and lifestyle of an American family.
2.- Challenge 2: Design a retrofit plan for apartments to improve the energy efficiency without rising the rent cost.
3.- Challenge 3: Design an onshore wind energy system that would contribute to the country’s 2030 goal of producing 20% of its electricity by wind power.
I chose Challenge 3 as I believe it is the most suitable for the area. This challenge gives more freedom on which kind of energy system we can develop on the area and how we can do it. It is also a project for an average family and not a whole state or country which from my point of view is much easier to achieve and then expand to all the families along the state.
The Midwest is a mixed rural and urban area with a cold climate and with a grid supply that makes the energy distribution easier and more efficient. Chicago is a city composed by flats and detached houses mainly where the average family size is three people.
Sustainable Energy Need and Problem Definition
The Midwest area of USA is known for its high production of fossil fuels and nuclear energy. Due to this fact the cost of energy in the area is lower and the population has 2% more energy consumption than the rest of the country average.
Due to its cold weather, space heating is the main use of the energy in a household at Illinois (51% of the total energy usage). Regarding space heating, there is less reliance in electricity (80% of households in Illinois use gas as their main heating fuel)
Nevertheless, the remaining usage of energy comes from electric power and it is there where we can make a bigger and quicker impact. The two more important sectors are Electrical appliances and water heating, followed by air conditioner.
Nowadays the most advanced renewable energy on the area are biomass and wind energy. However, they only represent a small percentage of the total energy production and if this situation does not change in the future, the Midwest will face energy problems once the non-renewable energy starts to run up.

My Design Concepts
As my design concept I would propose a solution based in the efficient use of insulation systems and a smart meters network connected to the city’s smart grid. I consider these are the most viable solution as they perfectly comply with the top 5 ‘’Design Evaluation criteria’’ points. The installation of these technologies will be quick, will not affect the aesthetics of the building and furthermore, they will offer a big increase in the energy efficiency of the building.

For the wall insulation the best material to be used is cellulose, due to safety and efficiency characteristics. Cellulose is made out of recycled paper (80%) and fire retardant (20%), characteristic which makes it the safest choice. It has also good performance when it comes to moist, as it is able to absorb it and eliminate it, while others insulators like foam are hydrophobic and makes the moisture accumulate inside the wall, what could end in serious damages in the structure.

Last but not less important, the installation of a smart meter will increase the consumers control and knowledge over their energy usage and this way the bill costs will see a reduction. The installation of a smart meter will enhance the energy efficiency of the apartments and will also ease the installation of solar and wind generators in the future.
Finally, to get the energy efficiency to its top we can use Long Duration LED Lighting, as they are far more efficient than any other lighting technology, and smart appliances such as washing machines and tumble dryers which can work together with the smart meter and make the best usage of energy, being able to choose low energy cost times to start working.

My Energy Research
Smart Grid
I have attended the Smart Grids Workshop on 23th October. There I realized about the great utility smart meters have when it comes to increase a household energy efficiency.
Smart grid is the integration of electrical and communications infrastructures with advanced process automation and information technologies within the existing electrical network (Bolase, 2012), this means that there is a real time communication between the power plant and the customer in order to keep a constant tracking of the energy usage and that way control the energy production of the power plant. The use of smart meters not only reduce CO2 emissions but also makes an impact on the energy efficiency of a household and lowers the energy costs, which makes this technology a great option to consider for our challenge solution.

Smart Grid Benefits
The great advantage of smart meters is that the consumers gets to see the energy consumption and the cost instantly. They also give the consumers a greater control as they can use electricity when it is cheapest and reduce the consumption when it is more expensive. All these features will incur in a cheaper energy bill at the end of the day.
Another benefit of the smart grid is that it will not only mean individual advantages, but will also contribute to the improvement of the whole network and reduce the energy line losses. Through all these advantages and the fact that it will help reduce Green House Gas emission and will ease the integration of renewable energies, the smart grid is a great option to help comply the country’s future energy efficiency goals.

Energy Workshop
Individual Reflection #1-Design Review Meeting #1
The marks given to our team in the Design Review Meeting #1 for each item where very good, except for the Design Process where we had a lower mark. These marks surprised me as I didn't expect them to be so high and I am pleased our team is doing a great job.
The feedback my team received was quite encouraging as Dr Tiwari said our team MyPortfolio Page was one of the best of all USA Teams. Even though the good overall feedback, we also had some aspects to improve as it was to create an Introduction page and improve the grammar and vocabulary of our pages.
So far the team is working perfectly fine. We had some organization problems at the beginning due to lack of communication but they were solved efficiently by the creation of groups in whatsapp, skype and the UCL email. In the present everyone has a clear task and responsibility on the team, fact that utterly improves the performance of the group.
The team project is coming out perfectly good. All the jobs have been achieved by the deadlines so far and with an outstanding result. The quality of the team members has helped to carry out a great job so far and will probably help to deliver a great solution to our challenge.
Individual Reflection #2
The marks we got for our Design Meeting #2 where higher than the ones before and very promising. These marks surprised the team in a positive way again, and they gave us more motivation to keep working and put even more effort to reach the top mark which is our team's goal now.
The Feedback received from our academic leader was very good in overall and very motivating. However we were told we could put more effort into the presentations of our project, in order to attract and catch the viewer's attention. This has become now the team's first goal, in order to achieve the top mark we are pursuing.
Things in the team are working perfectly well, we have met all the deadlines and with good results. The improvements in organization and communication in the last week have helped to improve our efficiency as well. Now we need to put the maximum effort to end this project as good or even better than we have been doing so far.
Finally, our team project has been developed perfectly well. The teamwork and commitment has helped to achieve an outstanding result which now only needs to be polished and presented the best it can be.
Final Design Reflection
The first thing I would like to say in my final reflection is I am very proud of my team and the work done by all of us during this project. The general outcome has been splendid and this is because the team has worked very hard to achieve it.
The group started with some communication problems. We did not know each other at all and this lead to communication difficulties at the start. Nevertheless these problems were solved quickly thanks to the effort of all the team members and the creation of chat groups.
During the project, the team went through most of the design cycle stages (we did not go through the manufacturing stages). First we defined the needs, and created a brief indicating the problem and our evaluation criteria. After that we started doing research, for me one of the most important parts as here we learned everything we needed to create the best solution. Once we had all the research we came up with a solution that met all our brief criteria and solved the challenge perfectly. This final stage was the most difficult one for me as we had to take into consideration several factors such as finance, feasibility and viability of the Designs proposed.
All this experience helped me to understand the high importance of the design process and how important is to know what your problem is and who are the target users is in order to come up with the best idea. I also learned not to underestimate the possible problems that may occur, as they can become really serious problems and can take us unaware, as what happened with our team video editing.
After this project I realized how important teamwork is. None of our job would have been done without proper teamwork and that showed me how a team of competent people can always achieve a better solution than an individual. In our team we achieved this through the use of communication and a great management of tasks based on the members’ strengths. This way we extracted the best of each member and that resulted in an excellent solution.
From my point of view the success of our team working together had a great impact in the outcome we achieved. As I already said none of what we achieved would have been done without a good team dynamic, and this is because a good team working dynamic helps improve and increase the efficiency of work. In my team most of the time when we had a new idea some team members would point out things that others did not see at first, and therefore improve the understanding of it.
During the time the project was ongoing, my team successfully used most of the professional skills learned in other modules such as brainstorming, having technical arguments and going through the design cycle. Also we made great use of our good relationship at the moment of helping each other with reviewing the different parts that were going into the group’s page or any problem we may have had. The implementation of all these tools and knowledge the team achieved the result it was looking for at the end.
